Trumps says London wants ‘to go to sharia law’, attacks Mayor Sadiq Khan
The United States President Donald Trump has claimed in an address to the United Nations that London wants to “go to sharia law”. Trump made the assertion while addressing the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday
Trump attacked London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan calling him a “terrible Mayor” and criticized the United Nations for rewarding illegal migrants with asylum and monetary budgets.
“I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible Mayor, and it’s been changed, it’s been so changed. Now they want to go to sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can’t do that,” Trump said during the address.
Trump has repeatedly attacked Sadiq since 2015, when the Labour politician and the US President expressed divergent views about Muslimsā immigration to the US.
During Trumpās recent state visit to the UK, he said Sadiq was “among the worst mayors in the world”.
In 2019, Trump called the mayor “a stone-cold loser” while Sadiq accused him of stirring up far-right ideologies.
For years, the social media has shown alleged claims of implementation of Sharia law in London.
In 2020, some posts on Facebook showed an image of Sadiq Khan with a quote saying: “We are trialling shakira [sic] law in three of London’s boroughs right now. We will then roll it out in the remaining thirty next year,” which the Mayor’s office said was fabricated.
Sharia law is an Islamic legal system and Sharia councils exists in the UK as their work deals with religious marriage arbitration and they may also rule on financial matters but the UK Government has stated that their rulings are not legally binding.
