Tinubu appoints Tunji Disu acting IGP, as Egbetokun resigns

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as IGP.

In a statement on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Disu was appointed acting IGP pending a meeting between the President and the Police Council, where the President would consider Disu’s appointment as substantive head of police.

“In view of the current security challenges confronting the nation, and acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

“In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation,” Onanuga said.

Disu who was promoted to the position of Assistant Inspector-General of Police in 2025, was in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, until his recent appointment.

A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and a former head of the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, Disu has also served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the FCT, among other positions in the force.

Meanwhile, the former Police IGP Kayode Egbetokun resigned from his position on Tuesday.This was confirmed by Onanuga in a statement on Tuesday evening.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, following the submission of his letter citing pressing family considerations,” the statement read in part.

The President further thanked the ex-IGP for his “decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.”

“The President acknowledged his dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening internal security architecture during his tenure,” the statement added.
