Terrorism in Nigeria: Gunmen kill at least 30 on Palm Sunday in Plateau State attack
According to residents and local officials, unknown gunmen on Sunday night attacked a university community in Plateau State, Nigeria, killing at least 30 people.
This would be the latest bloodshed in a region scarred by religious extremism especially against the Christian population in Northern Nigeria.
The saga occurred in Plateau State, North central Nigeria, also called the Middle Belt, known for deadly terrorist and herders attack against Christian communities.
Reuters reports a phone call involving Markus Audu Kando, a resident and co-chair of Plateau youth interfaith group who said on the phone: “As I speak with you, the figure is now 30 … There are injured people at the hospital, but I cannot confirm their number.”
Reports say the gunmen arrived in the Gari Ya Waye community of Angwan Rukuba district, shooting at people indiscriminately.
According to Paul Mancha, a resident and chairperson of the youth council in Plateau, “People were here in the evening and unfortunately, wicked terrorists came and attacked our people. We have counted scores of people who are now dead and then so many others are also in the hospital receiving treatment,”
While the gunmen are yet to be specifically identified, the Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew in the district.
The University of Jos situated in the community where the incident occurred has consequently suspended examinations which where due to commence on Monday.
About two weeks back, there was a multiple suicide bombing attacks in Maiduguri, north-eastern Nigeria, claiming the lives of at least 23 persons and injuring over a hundred others.
US President Donald Trump had in October 2025 designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, accusing the Nigerian Government of not taking drastic steps in stemming the alleged genocide against Christians in the country.
The Nigerian government had however denied the allegation, debunking any systematic persecution of Christians, noting instead that terrorist organizations in the country have been targeting Christians and Muslims alike.
Trump had threatened to place sanctions on Nigeria by stopping all aids and assistance to the country, as well as taking military action, if the government does not move fast in tackling terrorism and protecting Christians.
