Nigerian Air Force reportedly strikes Borno-Yobe border market, many feared dead
Many persons were allegedly killed on Saturday, as a Nigerian military jet struck a weekly market at Jilli village.
The attack which took place near the border between Yobe and Borno states involved a military aircraft which was said to be engaged in an operation against Islamist militants in the area.
While the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is yet to confirm striking the market, it said on Saturday that it carried out “mop-up” air strikes on “identified terrorist locations” within the Jilli axis of Borno State.
The affected area is at the heart of Boko Haram insurgency, which has killed thousands and left many refugees in its wake, with over two million people rendered homeless.
The statement by NAF on Saturday noted that its strikes were “aimed at fleeing remnants and regrouping cells seeking to exploit the difficult terrain”.
The strike on the market so far has conflicting figures of victims, ranging from 10 to 200 death figures reported by diverse media outlets, with several others sustaining varying degrees of injuries
According to witnesses, the attack which took place at about 4 p.m. involved several fighter jets, leaving traders and residents in panic.
Sources say that while the strikes may have been aimed at suspected Boko Haram terrorists in the area, innocent civilians were allegedly hit in the process.
Further details of the incident are awaited from the Nigerian Air Force.
