Malami ‘rearrested’ after release from Kuje prison
Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), was rearrested on Monday by security agents shortly after he was released from the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
According to reports, officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) took him into custody immediately he exited the Kuje facility.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission however stated that he was not rearrested, as the Correctional Service confirmed that Malami was released after he met his bail conditions.
“He has been released. He perfected his bail conditions and was released this afternoon,” an official said reportedly.
The DSS is yet to release any statement regarding the situation with the former Attorney General.
Malami was granted bail alongside his wife and son on January 7 by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on a N500 million bail condition each.
Other conditions they were required to meet included the provision of two sureties with verifiable landed property within Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarimpa, a deposition of property documents with the court, and submission of affidavits of means.
They were also made to submit their international passport, as they were barred from travelling abroad without permission.
The trio had been remanded at Kuje after their arraignment by the EFCC on December 29, 2025, on charges bordering on money laundering up to the tune of N8.7 billion.
Malami had been in EFCC custody since December 8, 2025, after he failed to meet earlier bail conditions, with Justice Babangida Hassan of the FCT High Court deeming his detention as legal.
