Kano Gov Yusuf resigns from NNPP after weeks of speculation

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), noting that his exit from the party is aimed at fostering peace and unity in the state.

According to the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the resignation was contained in a letter which the Governor addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale local government area.

“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party. This decision takes effect from Sunday January 25 2026,” the Governor stated in the letter.

The Governor attributed his exit to internal crises within the party and the need to protect the overall interests of the people of Kano State.

“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination.

“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable and have generated uncertainty at both state and national levels,” the letter read.

Yusuf explained that his decision was not taken out of bitterness but after a careful consideration, while bearing public interest in mind.

“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State.

“This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State,” he said.

He further appreciated the NNPP for the opportunity and support offered him in his political journey.

“I remain sincerely appreciative of the opportunity given to me by the party, its leadership, and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey since 2022, as well as the support, goodwill, and cooperation extended to me during my time in the party.”

According to reports, the Governor pulled 21 state legislators, 8 federal representatives, and 44 local government chairmen with him.

The NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, confirming receipt of the resignation letter, commended the giant strides of the Governor in the state.

“I wish to concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party. Though we are trying our best to contain it, we have no option but to accept the resignation of one of the most performing Governors produced by the NNPP.”

While the Governor is yet to officially announce his next political destination, there have been speculations about his planned defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Yusuf had on Monday visited President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for a private meeting. The Governor was at the Villa, making his way to the President’s office at about 4pm.

The ongoing e-registration of the APC was said to have been suspended in Kano based on the President’s directive, who wants Governor Yusuf to be the first to register after joining the party officially.

The President had in a birthday statement on January 5 poured encomiums on the Governor in celebration of Yusuf’s 63rd birthday, praising his achievements in the state.
