INEC denies reports of timetable release for 2027 general election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied circulating reports on the Commission’s release of the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by Adedayo Oketola, Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, in which the Commission dismissed the reports as false and misleading.

“INEC has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election,” the statement read in part.

The statement said the Commission operates strictly within the provisions of the law, stressing on section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which grants the Commission the right to publish a notice of election not later than 360 days before a general election date.

It added that any timetable or schedule issued outside such statutory framework cannot emanate from INEC.

The Commission further assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election would be released in due course, and in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022.

Urging the public and the media to disregard the fake reports, INEC stated that the information concerning the general election would be communicated through the Commission’s established and verified channels.
