Dangote truck crashes into tricycle in Ogun, kills 5

A Dangote truck ran into a tricycle on Friday, crushing five people to death. The incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, identified the vehicles involved as an unregistered tricycle and a truck with the number plate GRZ 767 XA.

The truck was said to have lost its brakes, ramming into a tricycle conveying the five victims in the process.

According to Akinbiyi, ā€œA fatal road traffic accident occurred at Alapoka Village, Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday at 8:25 p.m.

ā€œThe accident involved an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with the number plate GRZ 767 XA. The tricycle was conveying five people. The five people died on the spot.

ā€œAccording to an eyewitness, the truck lost its brakes and rammed into the tricycle, but unfortunately the driver was not observant that he had collided with the tricycle until its tyre crushed the tricycle and the passengers.ā€

Accident scene

He stated that while residents of the community had attempted to attack the rescue team, save for the intervention of sister security agencies, the TRACE led by Adedayo Omonayajo was quick in its intervention to lead a rescue team to the scene of the incident.

ā€œThe Acting TRACE Head and the Ilaro Commander led a rescue team to the scene and were almost attacked by angry residents, but the intervention of the Amotekun Corps doused the tension.

ā€œThe presumed dead were taken to the morgue by Federal Road Safety Corps officials,ā€ Akinbiyi said.

Dangote trucks have been involved in several fatal crashes in the last 12 months

In August this year, Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Phyna, was involved in an accident with a Dangote cement truck which left her with severe leg damage, eventually leading to her death.

Also in August, a Dangote truck heading towards Benin, rammed into three vehicles along Auchi-Okpella-Okene road, leading to the death of three persons on the spot, with one person sustaining injury.

In November 2024, a Dangote truck was involved in a multiple crash in Lagos and Ogun leading to the death of four persons and several injured.

All cases have been as a result of brake failure from the trucks, leading many to question the road-worthiness of the company’s trucks.
