Court to rule on El-Rufai’s bail application April 14
The Federal High Court Kaduna has fixed April 14 2026 to rule on the bail application by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
El-Rufai on Wednesday appeared at the court for the continuation of his bail application hearing, following his return to ICPC custody after his Tuesday appearance.
He is currently faced with a 10-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering, abuse of office and related financial offences.
The outcome of the hearing would determine if the former governor will continue to face trial from custody or granted temporary freedom on bail.
El-Rufai arrived at the court at about 9 a.m. on Wednesday amid tight security around the court premises, as movements were restricted by security personnel.
The hearing follows Tuesday’s adjournment by the presiding judge, Justice Rilwan Aikawa, as a result of varying legal issues between the defence and prosecution teams.
El-Rufai ‘s lawyers, led by Ubong Akpan, had initially filed a motion requesting the presiding judge to step aside due to alleged bias. The request was later withdrawn, leading to some delays.
Also contributing to the adjournment on Tuesday was the submission of a counter-affidavit opposing bail by the prosecution, which left the defence a limited time to respond.
Wednesday’s hearing however saw arguments by both the defence and the prosecution teams.
Adewole Iyamu, lead defence counsel, confirmed that the bail application had been formally moved in court, and the prosecution had duly responded to it.
Verdict on the bail application was later adjourned to April 14 by the presiding judge.
El-Rufai would also be appearing before the Federal High Court in Abuja on April 10 in a separate matter filed by the Department of State Services, DSS.
