Angela Okorie remanded in Suleja prison over alleged cyberstalking
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja has ordered the remand of Nollywood actress Angela Okorie in Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State, after being arraigned on charges of criminal defamation and cyberstalking.
He made the order on Wednesday while ruling on a bail application by Okorie’s lawyer, Alex Ejesieme (SAN), shortly after Okorie pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge, ruling that the defendant be kept in prison till January 30 when the court would hear her bail application.
The charge brought before the court by the police against the actress bordered on the cyberstalking and defamation of a fellow actress Mercy Johnson Okojie by the defendant (in conspiracy with Ifeoma Mbonu who is now at large), on their Instagram and Tiktok posts; offences allegedly committed in 2024, which violate the Cybercrime Act of 2015, according to the police.
Victor Okoye the prosecuting lawyer asked the court to remand the defendant in Suleja Correctional Centre pending when the prosecution would open its case, on a date to be determined by the court.
The defendant’s lawyer Ejesieme however objected to Okoye’s application, claiming that his client was not afforded adequate time for preparation and defence, as a copy of the charge was only handed to the defendant barely an hour before proceedings, asking the court to allow his client an administrative bail.
Justice Nwite after hearing the extended arguments from both parties confirmed the invitation earlier sent to the defendant on January 16 by the police, while also faulting the police for denying the defendant access to her lawyers before the court’s proceedings.
Ordering all parties to file and exchange necessary documents in relation to the formal bail application to be filed by the defendant within 24 hours, the judge also ordered that the defendant be remanded in Suleja prison until her bail application hearing on January 30.
Operatives of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department arrested Okorie in Lagos on Tuesday.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, who confirmed the development on Wednesday, told TheCable Lifestyle that the actress was taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja.
Okorie’s feud with fellow actress Mercy Johnson escalated in 2025 after Okorie made controversial claims about Johnson’s health, while also accusing her of hypocrisy.
