AFCON: Super Eagles beat Pharaohs of Egypt 4-2 on penalties to secure bronze medal
The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday secured a 4-2 victory over the Pharaohs of Egypt on penalties, during their third-place face-off in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria showing more attacking intent in the 90 minutes of play had their first-half goal disallowed by VAR. Both sides were unable to produce further goals in the match.
The match proceeded directly to penalty shootout without the traditional 30-minute extra time.
Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush of Egypt had their penalties saved by Nigerian goal keeper Stanley Nwabali, with Nigeria maintaining the advantage to secure a 4-2 victory over the Pharaohs.
The Super Eagles had on Wednesday lost 4-2 to the Atlas Lions of Morocco on penalties at the semi-finals, while Egypt lost to Senegal by a lone goal.
The host country Morocco would now face 2021 winners Senegal at the final match on Sunday, while Nigeria who last won AFCON in 2013 has once again secured a bronze medal.
