Why EFCC detained ex-Sokoto Governor Tambuwal
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, detained the former Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal over allegations of corruption.
According to news sources, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives was detained at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja for alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals which amounted to about N189 billion.
This has been alleged to be a violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022 by the EFCC.
Sources disclosed that Tambuwal who arrived EFCC’s headquarters at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday August 11, was still being interrogated as of evening time same day.
Tambuwal was a member of the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2015 and served as Speaker of the green chambers between 2011 and 2015.
He was elected Governor of Sokoto State in 2015, and reelected in 2019, serving for two terms that elapsed in 2023. He is currently a Nigerian Senator representing Sokoto south in the red chambers.
Tambuwal has been a member of both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). He is currently one of the champions of a new coalition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
