Polio outbreak prompts emergency vaccination in Kano
Emergency vaccination has commenced in Kumbotso local government area of Kano State due to a recent polio outbreak.The poliovirus was detected in a child in Challawa ward.
Sulaiman Dauda Basarake, vice-chairman of the council, said in a stakeholders’ meeting, that the council would work with health officials to ensure vaccination for all eligible children, adding that the council chairman and councillors would participate in the exercise.
He further admonished vaccination workers to discharge their duties diligently and honestly.
Lawan Ahmad Getso, head of primary healthcare said the detected case had prompted questions about the possiblity of transmission to other children and communities, urging stakeholders to mobilise support for the vaccination exercise.
Naziru Sani, the LGA facilitator, said one infected child could mean that there are other carriers who are not symptomatic, calling on parents to accept vaccination for their children in order to truncate the transmission.
Also speaking at the stakeholders’ meeting was Dr Mukhtar Ali, cluster consultant with the World Health Organisation (WHO), who stated that the affected child had received routine vaccinations more than once, emphasizing the point that some children could carry the virus without displaying symptoms.
He stressed that vaccination of all eligible children is crucial to stopping the transmission.
