Ebola: NCDC says Nigeria on ‘high alert’
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has said the nation is currently on “high alert”, in response to the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where about 3,700 deaths have so far been reported, according to health officials.
NCDC director general, Jide Idris, in a statement, said the development has placed the country on alert, as measures were being taken to combat the threat.
“These measures will continue to be reviewed in line with the evolving epidemiological situation and public health risk assessment,” Idris said.
Travellers from countries with active EVD transmission are to complete health declaration forms as part of the measures.
“passengers from all other countries are exempted from completing the form at this time,” he added.
The center advised the public to “remain vigilant”, look out for symptoms consistent with the disease and quickly seek medical attention where necessary.
The center, while emphasizing its commitment to public health interest, said the advisory followed the NCDC’s dynamic risk assessment and consultations with public health experts and the federal health ministry.
The current Ebola outbreak in the DRC has earlier been reported to be growing exponentially, with officials reporting a total of 7,672 confirmed cases, including 3,699 related deaths based on available data as of September 19, 2026.
The 17th DRC Ebola outbreak which was declared on May 15, has become the largest in the country’s history, spreading faster than any on record.
The outbreak is said to have already begun spreading for several weeks before its date of declaration.
