Edo assembly impeaches
former speaker Agbebaku one week after resignation, suspension
Edo State House of Assembly on Monday said it had formally impeached its former speaker Blessing Agbebaku who had earlier resigned his speakership position and was further suspended by the house.
Agbebaku, representing Owan West constituency 1, resigned his position on Monday August 17 2026, while Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo constituency 1, was elected as the new speaker.
The motion for the impeachment was moved by the majority leader Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by Amhed Waziri, as the new speaker insisted that Agbebaku’s removal from office was as a result of impeachment and not resignation.
Idiaye threatened to engage security agencies should the former speaker fail to comply with the directive of returning all government property in his possession.
“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku.
“And the impeached Speaker is to return all government property in his possession, and security agencies would be engaged if the former Speaker fails to comply with the directive of the House,” Idiaye said.
The speaker noted that the impeachment notice was signed by 17 members of the House.
He added that the indefinite suspension had been changed to impeachment since Agbebaku’s resignation notice had not been officially presented and documented.
