Lindsey Graham’s sister chosen as replacement for late senator

Sister of late US Senator Lindsey Graham has been chosen to serve as temporary replacement for the South Carolina lawmaker who died from an aortic tear on Saturday.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster made the disclosure on Monday, while introducing Darline Graham Nordone, stating that the senator-designate would now finish his brother’s work.

Responding, Nordone said: “It is such an honour. Lindsey has always been there for me and now I will be there for him.”

US President Donald Trump and other officials had called for Nordone to serve as the late senator’s replacement, as a tribute to him.

The late senator who never got married nor had children of his own was close with his sister, legally adopting her as his daughter after their parents died 15 months apart while they were young.

With Graham’s term set to end in January 2027, South Carolina governor said Nordone would serve out the remainder of the term.

“Lindsey took care of his little sister. It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to finish his work for him now,” McMaster said.

The senator-designate in her response said: “This is what Lindsey would have wanted and I plan to honour him in this way.

“To Lindsey, I miss you more than I can even put into words, but I’m going to do this. I got it. Thank you,” she added.

Graham died over the weekend at the age of 71 due to an “aortic dissection” caused by cardiovascular disease, according to preliminary findings by the Washington DC medical examiner.

Graham died shortly after returning from a visit to Ukraine. He had made many of such visits since the commencement of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.

The late senator remained vocal in matters of US intervention and leadership across the globe, advocating for military intervention in Iran and Iraq, and was a leading voice for the unwavering US support for Israel and Ukraine.

Graham began his political career in the early 90s after serving as a city and county attorney in South Carolina. He also served in the US Air Force as a prosecutor and defense attorney. He was elected to the house in 1994 and first elected to the US senate in 2002.

He was running for a fifth term in this fall’s midterm elections before his sudden demise. A temporary replacement to fill his now-vacant seat, in this case his sister Nordone, has now been chosen by the governor of South Carolina in accordance with the law.

His death has also left open a vacancy in the republican nomination for the seat, since he was up for re-election. Though officials are yet to make any announcement on the subject, a special primary election would be held on August 11, with a possible runoff on August 25, to choose his replacement for the forthcoming senatorial election.
