Obi meets US envoy, advocates credible elections in 2027
Former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has met with the United States Consul General in Lagos.
This was disclosed on Tuesday by Obi on his verified X handle (formerly Twitter) where he stated that the US Consul General, Mr Rick Swart and himself had robust discussions centering on credible elections and economic cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
Obi wrote: “This morning, in Lagos, I met with the U.S. Consul General, Mr Rick Swart, where we discussed strengthening the bilateral relationship.
“We focused on promoting credible elections in Nigeria, ensuring they are free from interference, and fostering a space where all political parties, especially opposition parties, can thrive and contribute.”
This comes two days after the former Anambra governor defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Obi received his membership card on Sunday, where he was welcomed into the party by Senator Seriake Dickson, former governor of Bayelsa State and national leader of the NDC.
Obi, who was the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and a frontline aspirant for the ADC presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election, confirmed his resignation from the ADC in a statement on his X handle on Sunday, citing intra-party crisis as the main reason for his defection.
