44 confirmed dead in Kebbi attack, as police commence clearance operation

The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the death of 44 persons in the coordinated attack on several communities in Shanga local government area of the state.

The attacks were carried out in several villages including Gebe, Kalkami, Kawara, Kasoshi, Awaye, Tungar Rini, Binuwa, and Dabe.

The state police command said it had launched a clearance operation in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, in a statement on Friday, the operation had already started yielding results and restoring stability in the affected areas.

“Massive deployments of police and other security agencies have led to the return of relative calm in the affected areas, while discreet investigations are ongoing,” he stated.

The police said the intervention targets high-risk areas such as farmlands, forests, border communities, and remote settlements.

Coordinated patrols, intelligence-led stop-and-search operations, and joint actions with other security agencies, were also noted as crucial part of the operation.

The command said two AK-47 rifles were recovered along the Illo-Kamba axis due to the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing.

The state Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, called on residents to remain vigilant, while urging cooperation with security agencies.

“We call on members of the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious movements, and cooperate fully with security agencies,” he said, while calling for assistance from traditional rulers, clerics and youth bodies in intelligence gathering.

He noted that cooperation with security agencies by communities remain vital to combating armed groups terrorising the region.
