INEC meets party leaders to unveil guidelines for 2027 general election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday met with leaders of political parties in Nigeria to unveil the new electoral guidelines in view of the 2027 general election.

The meeting which held at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, had chairmen and secretaries of political parties and their representatives in attendance, amongst whom were Senator Nenadi Usman representing the Labour Party, while Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu represented the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which prompted a review of existing procedures, the meeting focused on presenting and deliberating on the newly drafted electoral guidelines for the 2027 polls.

According to INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, political parties and stakeholders can no longer operate within the framework of outdated regulations, as they would now align with the updated guidelines and the provisions of the new electoral law.

The commission also disclosed other preparatory measures towards the election, including the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, scheduled to commence with online pre-registration on August 18 2025, followed by in-person registration from August 25.

In order to remove duplicate entries and deceased persons from the voter register, INEC further announced plans for a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise.

Electoral reforms remain a conflicting issue in the forthcoming general election in the country. The Senate’s stance on real-time electronic transmission of result is still being debated by many Nigerians.
