Domestic fire outbreak claims lives of two siblings in Ondo State
A domestic fire outbreak has claimed the lives of two minor sisters in Ode-Aye, Okitipupa local government area of Ondo State.
The two siblings, Queen Ohwo (6 years) and Everlyne Ohwo (4 years) were burnt to death in the tragic fire incident which occurred at their residence, in Olaribigbe Street in the Zion Area.
The tragic incident which occurred on March 18, 2026, has been reportedly attributed to cooking negligence, based on initial findings.
The Ondo State Police spokesman, Jimoh Abayomi, who confirmed the incident, said officers were dispatched to the scene, carrying out necessary documentation, while the bodies of the deceased were evacuated to a health facility in Ode-Aye.
He noted that the Ondo State Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal “has ordered a thorough and discreet investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak”.
Abayomi added that “The Divisional Police Officer in Ode-Aye has been directed to cordon off the scene, obtain statements from relevant witnesses, and collaborate with the Federal Fire Services to determine the extent and origin of the fire”.
While commiserating with the bereaved family, the police command urged residents to adopt strict safety measures, warning against unattended cooking and improper handling of flammable materials.
The command also emphasised the need for close supervision of children around cooking areas to prevent similar tragedies.
“Never leave cooking unattended, especially when children are around; keep flammable materials away from cooking areas and open flames; ensure children are not left alone in homes where fire or heat sources are in use; have basic fire safety tools, such as fire extinguishers or buckets of sand/water, readily available; and educate household members, especially children, on fire hazards and emergency response” the police command said.
Abayomi said the command remained committed to safeguarding lives and property, while encouraging residents to remain safety-conscious at all times.
