Rivers Assembly to serve Gov Fubara impeachment notice within 7 days

The Rivers State House of Assembly has said it would serve impeachment notice to the Governor of Rivers State Siminalayi Fubara within 7 days.

The Assembly began impeachment proceedings against the Governor and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, during a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, wherein the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read out a notice of allegations and gross misconduct against the Governor.

The Speaker said the notice which was signed by 26 members of the House would be served to Fubara in the next seven days.

A notice of allegations and gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor was also read out by the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Linda Stewart.

Some of the allegations against the Governor as read out in the notice by the Majority Leader included, the demolition of the Assembly Complex, extra budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and refusal to obey the Supreme Court on the financial autonomy of the House, amongst others.

The allegations against the Deputy included, reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds, obstruction of the House of Assembly from performing its constitutional duties as outlined by the 1999 Constitution, conniving to allow unauthorised persons to occupy offices without proper screening by the legitimate House of Assembly, amongst others.

This is the second time the lawmakers would be making an impeachment move against the Governor and his Deputy. The first was in March 2025 after Fubara fell out with the former Governor of Rivers State now Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, culminating in the declaration of a state of emergency by the Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rted.) was appointed as the administrator of the State, with Fubara returning as Governor after a reconciliation between him and Wike.
