Senator representing Enugu North Okey Ezea dies in UK, colleagues pay tribute
The Senator representing Enugu North, Okey Ezea has passed on in the United Kingdom where he was receiving medical treatment, leaving the Nigerian Senate in yet another mourning on Wednesday.
The late Senator Ezea would be the second serving Senator from the South East to kick the bucket within two years. Recall that Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of Anambra State also passed away in London in July 2024 at the age of 52.
Late Senator Okey Ezea was elected on the platform of the Labour Party, making him the only LP member from Enugu State in the 10th National Assembly.
Colleagues paid tributes as news of his passing reached the National Assembly, with many describing him as humble, principled, and prayerful, stating that his loss has left a deep void in the red chamber.
A colleague of the late Senator who represents Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, said the news of his passing was received with “with profound shock and deep sorrow.”
Kalu who described the late Ezea as his brother added: “His death is a painful blow that has left me personally devastated. Senator Ezea was more than a fellow legislator. He was a friend with whom I shared a close and sincere bond.
“Our friendship was built on mutual respect, brotherhood, and genuine affection.”
Kalu extended condolences to the Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Governor and people of Enugu State as well as the family of the deceased.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central Senatorial District, while mourning the deceased Senator, described him as a gentle and wise colleague whose encouragement sustained her during difficult moments.
“You were a good man! Wise and gentle. Your prayers kept me going through my darkest moments, and I will miss you in chambers.
“Enugu North Senatorial District, Kogi Central honours your senator and mourns with you. Rest in peace, Distinguished Senator Okey Ezea.”
