Tinubu to meet with President Trump over alleged Christian killings
The Nigerian President Bola Tinubu would be meeting with the United States President Donald Trump to iron out issues surrounding allegations of genocide against Christians in Nigeria and Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’.
This was disclosed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, who stated that the prospective meeting would focus on military cooperation against terrorism and clarification on whether terrorists target only Christians or all faiths in Nigeria.
Bwala wrote in the post: “Both President @officialABAT and President @realDonaldTrump have shared interests in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism against humanity.
āPresident Trump has assisted Nigeria a lot by authorising the sale of arms, and President Tinubu has adequately utilised that opportunity in the fight against terrorism, with massive results to show for it.
āAs for the differences as to whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or all faiths, those would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet in the coming days, either in the State House or White House.ā
Trump had reiterated his earlier admonition to the Nigerian Government to combat the menace of religious extremism and terrorism in the Country, warning the Nigerian Government that he had informed the US War Department to prepare for possible military action in Nigeria against āIslamic terroristsā. This was after Trump designated Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’ on Friday.
The US President had accused the Nigerian Government of not taking serious steps to stem the alleged genocide against the Christian population in the country ā an allegation the Nigerian Government had denied.
Trump had also threatened to place sanctions on Nigeria by stopping all aids and assistance to the Country, if the Government does not move fast in tackling terrorism and protecting Christians.
