Nigerian military reacts to alleged coup plot by top officers

The Nigerian military through the Defence Headquarters has reacted to the current alleged coup plot narrative in the media space, calling it false and malicious.

An online report had alleged that the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary activities was as a result of a coup attempt by some military officers.

Sahara Reporters particularly, claimed that the arrest of 16 high-ranking military officers by the Defence Intelligence Agency, was as a result of alleged meetings held in secrecy to overthrow the current civilian government in the country.

It also claimed that the cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade was not unrelated to the plot.

The military in a statement on Saturday through its Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said the publication was intended to create tension and distrust among Nigerians.

The statement read in part: “The attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to a false and misleading report by an online publication insinuating that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an alleged attempted military coup.

ā€œThe claims by the said publication are entirely false, malicious, and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace.”

ā€œThe decision regarding the cancellation of the 65th Independence Anniversary parade was to allow Mr President to attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country and for members of the Armed Forces to sustain the momentum in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry,ā€ Gusau added.

The Defence Headquarters clarified that the detention of 16 military officers was strictly a disciplinary issue being handled through a routine process.

ā€œThe ongoing investigation involving the sixteen officers is a routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism are maintained within the ranks. An investigative panel has been duly constituted, and its findings will be made public,ā€ the statement said.

The military further reaffirmed its loyalty to the Nigerian constitution and democratic governance, while urging Nigerians to disregard the rumours:

ā€œThe Armed Forces of Nigeria remain firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Tinubu. Democracy is forever,ā€ Gusau assured.
