World Cup qualifiers: Nigeria battles Lesotho today in decisive match
Sports loving Nigerians are enraptured in suspense as the Super Eagles of Nigeria takes on the Crocodiles of Lesotho in a decisive match, in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The match which is scheduled to take place on Friday October 10, will hold at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane, at 6:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. Nigerian time).
The match is the last chance for the Super Eagles to fan the embers of hope again in their 2026 World Cup qualification quest, as they were almost certain to miss out after their September 1-1 draw against South Africa.
Fortune shone on the Eagles when points were subtracted from South Africa for fielding an ineligible player which narrowed their leading gap and gave other teams in group C a chance at qualification.
With the ruling, Nigeria became three points behind Benin Republic and South Africa. The two remaining games will therefore reset the qualification trajectory of countries in the group which further gives Nigeria a glimmer of hope.
If they are to have any chance at qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, the Super Eagles of Nigeria cannot afford to lose any of the remaining two matches, beginning with today’s (Friday) match against Lesotho, while envisaging a poor outing by South Africa in their matches against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
A win in today’s outing is crucial to the Super Eagles’ World Cup campaign, as Benin Republic currently tops the group with 14 points (+4 goal difference), while South Africa is second with 14 points (+2 goal difference). Nigeria and Rwanda are currently on 11 points, with Nigeria having a +2 goal difference, leaving Nigeria third in the group, and Rwanda with a neutral goal difference.
