Oyo students stage protest in support of Dangote refinery

Students under the aegis of the National Association of Oduduwa Students (NOAS), Coalition of Yoruba Students, and Yoruba Movement have taken to the streets in a peaceful solidarity protest for the Dangote Refinery.

This is coming in the wake of the Refinery’s recent faceoff with oil unions, PENGASSAN, NUPENG, and the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria.

Reports say that the protesters converged at Iwo Road Roundabout at Ibadan-Lagos expressway, Oyo State, marching through major routes, with placards bearing inscriptions such as, ā€œDon’t Kill Dangote Refinery,ā€ “#EndPENGASSAN,ā€ “DangoteRefineryIsANationalAsset,ā€ among others.

The protesting students said there is a coordinated attempt by vested interests to frustrate the operations of the refinery, and are therefore drawing government’s attention through the protest, as the NAOS President, Olalere Adetunji, called on the Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and relevant government agencies to arrest the situation.

ā€œWe want to use this period to appeal to the Federal Government to protect the refinery and ensure that labour and marketers’ actions do not derail Nigeria’s move toward fuel self-sufficiency,ā€ Adetunji said.

The protest was ongoing as of the time of this report. Details will emerge shortly.
